General Consultation

Our general consultation services are generally less intensive than our early intervention service and have much more flexibility. Essentially we can develop a custom behavioural service within our framework to meet the needs of your family.

As with all our services, Best Behaviour first begins with a behavioural assessment of your child. We use The Scales of Independent Behaviour-Revised (SIB-R). This assessment allows us to determine what age your child is functioning at on 14 different adaptive subscales including:

  1. Fine motor
  2. Gross motor
  3. Social interaction skills
  4. Language comprehension
  5. Language expression
  6. Eating and meal preparation skills
  7. Toileting skills
  1. Dressing skills
  2. Personal self-care skills
  3. Domestic skills
  4. Punctuality skills
  5. Money and value skills
  6. Work skills
  7. Home and community orientation skills

The SIB-R also allows us to assess the severity of problem behaviours under 3 broad headings:

  1. Internalized problem behaviours
  2. Externalized problem behaviours
  3. Asocial problem behaviours

The SIB-R can help us priority which goals should be addressed first and which goals could be addressed later. This assessment is administered by asking the adult who knows the child best (typically a parent) a range of questions. This assessment is not “done” on the child directly. If your child has problem behaviours that need to be reduced or eliminated and replaced with more acceptable alternative behaviours, we will also conduct a functional assessment. Functional assessments allow us to uncover the reasons why the problem behaviour is occurring (see our link on functional assessments). We will also ask you to complete a reinforcement checklist. Most of the behaviour plans that we develop rely on the power of positive reinforcement to change behaviour. For us to achieve success, we need to know right from the start, what parts of your child’s environment may be reinforcing.

Most importantly, data on the problem behaviour will need to be collected. Together, we will select the type of data collection that best suits the type of problem behaviour factoring in the needs of your child and your family. We need to collect data before we introduce behaviour plans for several reasons. We are well aware that data collection is an unwelcomed chore for many families. Indeed, some families view data collection as a waste of time while others see it as being too intrusive into their family’s routines. While it is true that data is an extra responsibility, there are 4 key reasons why we include this step at Best Behaviour:

  1. Without data, ineffective behaviour programs might needlessly continue—this can end up wasting a lot of your time.
  2. Without data, effective programs might be terminated too soon. Sometimes, changes are slow to develop and might only be detected by consistent data collection.
  3. Data is a primary source of objective information for us. The more accurate the information we receive, the better we can partner with you.
  4. Data informs and influences the course of the behaviour programs.

Best Behaviour Consulting will provide you with specific training in collecting and interpreting the data you collect.

With the participation of those important in your child’s life, we develop a Behaviour Support Plan. This assessment will outline the behaviour plans that can be implemented over the coming months. Typically we recommend multiple plans. These plans are implemented in a staggered fashion so that it doesn’t become “too much” implementing them all at once.

Our general consultation service is “front-end loaded” meaning that we typically work more in the first few months together and as success is achieved, we slowly reduce our supports so that you gain confidence implementing your new skills. As always, you are only a phone call or an email away from Best Behaviour Consulting.
